ALARM launches guide to managing children's services risks

Thursday 1 September 2016

The abuse of children is undoubtedly one of the most serious issues facing modern society. While child protection legislation and victim support has improved over time, the safeguarding of children must always remain a priority and local authorities have an important part to play in this multi-agency process. With this in mind, ALARM has developed an important, timely and useful guidance document for members involved in children’s services risk management and claims.

The document entitled Children's services: Alarm guide to managing risks aims to assist risk managers in identifying important issues in this complex area and to provide guidance on how those issues can be managed effectively. ALARM’s aim is to assist local authorities in their core objective of working effectively with other agencies to protect children from harm.

Practitioners and professionals from risk, insurance, the law and importantly, children’s services, have pooled expert knowledge to present guidance for ALARM members and colleagues working with them managing risk in children’s services. The Guide is a comprehensive collection of professional tips and information on safeguarding, child sexual exploitation and historical abuse. It spans relevant and related topics covering: media and communications, the law, claims management, documentation, strategic risk management, commissioning and outsourcing, and insurers.

Alison Michalska, Corporate Director for Children and Adults, Nottingham City Council and Vice President, the Association of Directors of Children’s Services commends the Guide and says: “For the first time you can find in one place guidance that not only supports the risk manager to recognise and address key risk issues but gives those working in children’s services a useful reference to understand the interdependencies and impacts across all areas of risk.”
