In this week's Meet the Member we speak to Susan Ruddock, Corporate Risk & Insurance Manager at Transport for Wales and Chair of the ALARM Wales Branch Committee.
What is your role and what are your main responsibilities?
I am the Corporate Risk & Insurance Manager for Transport for Wales. My main responsibilities in relation to risk management are to maintain and update the risk registers, reporting risks to the senior leadership team and the board. On the insurance side I need to ensure the smooth running of our insurance programme and claims process, ensuring that we have suitable and sufficient policies in place and that they are renewed on time.
How long have you been an ALARM member?
I have been an ALARM member since I joined my previous employer, Caerphilly County Borough Council, in 2006.
How long have you been an ALARM committee member?
I have only recently taken over the role of Chair of the ALARM Wales Branch at the end of October 2019, but I previously held the post for two years, from 2015 to 2016.
What made you want to join the Wales committee?
It is a great way to get all our Welsh members together to discuss relevant topics. I also wished to ensure that the Branch continued following the departure of the previous Chair.
What is involved in being a committee member?
I arrange the events for our meetings, which take place twice per year (April and October) with the assistance of Ash from the ALARM Office. I also attend the AGM and the annual Conference, ALARM's flagship event.
What do you get out of being an ALARM committee member?
It’s great to be able to facilitate a forum where issues that are central to our member organisations are discussed and worked through together. You feel that you have made a difference.
What would you say to any members considering joining an ALARM committee or focus group?
I would say that you should definitely go for it. You get loads of support from ALARM HQ, so it is not an onerous task at all. And making a difference certainly gives you a sense of satisfaction. It is also very good for your career progression.
