ALARM’s planning day focused on actions over the next year to take the association into a vibrant and sustainable era.

Six weeks into my tenure as President of ALARM I find myself taking a few days holiday from work and heading over to Manchester. Why Manchester? Well, to chair my first Board meeting of the year. It is also our annual planning day when we reflect on ALARM activity for the past 12 months and look ahead to the coming 12 months.

Our focus over the next year includes; reviewing the governance arrangements of ALARM and bringing them up-to-date and fit for purpose; building on the continued success of our Conference by delivering excellent training sessions for members; producing relevant guidance documents; and growing our membership in areas such as housing and education.

Importantly, in addition, we aim to encourage more members to engage with ALARM strategically.

I often hear the words: “ALARM needs to…” ahead of suggestions such as providing guidance on a particular subject or responding to industry consultations. What many of you may not know is that this activity relies on members contributing their expertise and giving their own time, as well as support from sponsors, partners and industry groups.

Being an active part of ALARM can be both challenging and rewarding. As a voluntary professional association, realisation of our plans relies on the volunteers who give their time for the benefit of all of our membership.

Our network of branches and sector groups, with the support of speakers from our sponsors, deliver some excellent seminars and networking events around the United Kingdom.

The ALARM Board is both a strategic and operational one, with many board directors working at an operational level to deliver our products for members. Although this is often with the help of our partners and sponsors, output is led by ALARM members. All this work is supported by the excellent administration team at the ALARM Office in Exeter, Devon.

I have led on a number of ALARM guides over the years, including most recently; the Back to basics insurance guide and the Insurance update. Currently we are working on a follow-up Back to basics procurement guide. Working on such projects can help broaden knowledge and hone technical skills, as well as improve general skills, such as project management.
