Session 5 - Assurance mapping

2.15pm – 3pm GMT, 14 November 2025 ‐ 45 mins

Session

In this session, Richard will bring the assurance mapping process to life, including some of the pitfalls that should be avoided. Drawing on over three decades of experience as an internal auditor within the higher education sector, Richard will assess the role of governing bodies and their committees (particularly audit and risk), the development, structure and style of assurance maps, ownership and links / integration with risk registers – and the associated updating and reporting. The session will draw out steps that can be taken to ensure that the process does not become bureaucratic and that it remains focused on ensuring institutions understand their risks, sources of assurance and how that can aid effective governance and oversight.
