Session
For risk management to be effective, it must be built into the culture and strategy of an organisation. For local government, this needs to include elected members – both at cabinet level and on relevant committees. However, getting councillor engagement on technical risks and controls can be very difficult. Risk management sits as a topic on committee meetings and there is a cabinet member responsible, but often risk reporting is glossed over as a box ticking exercise or excerpts are taken out for political purposes. At Thanet, Will and Aimee have worked closely together as fellow risk professionals and ALARM members to bridge the gap between Officers and Councillors. In this session, they will cover the main challenges around risk reporting to councillors in local government, give some examples of what has worked well in Thanet, and answer your questions about issues you may be having.
