Join us for the first ALARM Midlands event of 2024. Matt Hardwick from Zurich Municipal will start the day off with a bitesize session on risk related topics raised by members at the September 2023 ALARM Midlands event. Helen Chadwick, Station Manager at Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service will provide first hand experience of dealing with wildfires, an increasing risk of a changing climate. Sticking to this theme, Peter Grocock and Aidan Kerr will look at the challenges posed by climate change, and the possible solutions. We will round up the day with an extended lunch and networking session, an excellent opportunity to catch up with colleagues, members, and sponsors.

Looking back, Matt's journey with risk started as a child when he pushed the boundaries set by his parents. Risk management can be confusing and at times frustrating but a necessary topic. So often we hear of examples of how to create buy-in from senior officers to the merit of risk management. Within this session, Matt and Harvin will consider ways of promoting engagement of risk and how to make it interesting including a look at risk appetite – understanding the terms used and how to implement proportionally within our organisations.

Climate change is a reality that the world is facing. Alongside mitigation efforts to keep to the global target of an increase of 1.5 degrees, it is crucial to both understand the risk presented by the changing climate, and identify the steps that can be taken to adapt to that risk.
Understanding the complex relationship between our climate and the impacts on the ground - whether it is the sort of flooding we have seen this winter or extreme heat in the summer - is the key to driving resilience at the household, community and national level.
